Eiffel Tower to Go Dark in Honor of Pope Francis

In a solemn tribute to the late Pope Francis, the Eiffel Tower in Paris will turn off its iconic lights on Monday night, April 21, 2025. Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo announced the gesture as a mark of respect for the pontiff, who passed away at the age of 88.

Pope Francis, known for his humility and advocacy for the marginalized, died on Monday morning, prompting an outpouring of condolences from around the world. His final public appearance was on Easter Sunday at Saint Peter’s Square.

The decision to dim the Eiffel Tower’s lights reflects the global impact of Pope Francis’s leadership and his commitment to social justice and interfaith dialogue.

City officials are also considering naming a site in Paris after the late pontiff to honor his legacy and contributions to global peace and unity.
