Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji announced on Monday that the state government aims to provide free screening for hypertension and diabetes to 200,000 residents.
The initiative, part of the Nigeria Government’s ‘Project 10 Million – Know Your Number, Control Your Number’ campaign, is being conducted across 161 screening centers from October 28 to November 3, 2024.
Represented by Deputy Governor Monisade Afuye during the campaign’s flag-off in Ado Ekiti, Oyebanji highlighted the alarming statistic that there is a 70% chance of dying from these conditions between the ages of 30 and 70 in Nigeria. He emphasized the importance of raising awareness, noting that many individuals remain unaware of their health status, posing a significant risk to their well-being.
“The screening initiative will focus on adults aged 18 and above,” Oyebanji stated. “Our goal is to combine the ‘Project 10 Million’ initiative with innovative state interventions to boost demand for primary healthcare services, essential for achieving Universal Health Coverage.”
With non-communicable diseases (NCDs) increasingly prevalent in Nigeria accounting for 27% of deaths Oyebanji expressed concern over lifestyle changes contributing to this rise. His administration’s ‘Ilera Wa’ initiative also expands free healthcare services for pregnant women, including ante-natal and post-delivery care.
Health Commissioner Oyebanji Filani reinforced the mission: “The free screening is aimed at curbing the alarming rise of hypertension and diabetes in Ekiti and beyond.” He announced plans to extend the program to traditional palaces, schools, marketplaces, and faith-based institutions, ensuring broad access for all citizens.
