Emergency rule: Soldiers, tanks move into Rivers Govt House

President Bola Tinubu has declared a state of emergency in Rivers State during a nationwide broadcast, citing the need to restore law and order.

As part of the declaration, Tinubu announced the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for an initial period of six months.

The President also appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas as the administrator to oversee the state’s affairs during this period.

Shortly after the announcement, soldiers took control of the Rivers State Government House in Port Harcourt. An insider revealed that Governor Fubara was still in his official residence when the troops arrived around 9 p.m. The source added, “As of now, there are soldiers inside Government House, but the governor is in his residence.”

Additionally, an Armoured Personnel Carrier was stationed at the entrance to the Government House, monitoring the road.
