A group of 114 #EndBadGovernance protesters, including 30 minors, whose release was ordered by President Bola Tinubu on Monday, have arrived at the State House Auditorium in Abuja.
They were brought to the premises at around 2:00 pm and were received by Vice President Kashim Shettima on behalf of Tinubu to be handed over to their respective state governors.
Their release was facilitated by the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi.
Justice Obiora Egwatu of the Federal High Court in Abuja had earlier dismissed the case against the protesters as requested by the Office of the Attorney-General.
In a statement on Monday, Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga said the Nigerian humanitarian affairs ministry had been asked “to ensure the safe return of all the minors to their families while an investigation has been opened into the circumstances leading to their prolonged detention”.
The accused were charged with treason and inciting a military coup after they took part in deadly August protests against economic hardship.
The minors’ arraignment sparked public outrage and criticism of the government after they were paraded in court last Friday.
