Peaceful protestors gathering at Eagle Square in Abuja were met with violence as Nigeria Police Force agents launched tear gas canisters into the crowd.
Similarly, protesters gathering close to the Federal Secretariat in Abuja were met by tear gas, which turned the otherwise peaceful demonstration into a violent altercation. The otherwise peaceful demonstration has been ruined by the police’s brutal response.
Protesters in the Federal Capital Territory were infuriated when Police Commissioner Benneth Igwe abruptly ordered them to relocate from their peaceful assembly point near the MKO Abiola Stadium to inside the stadium.
The crowd, who had been demonstrating peacefully, responded with defiance and catcalls, refusing to comply with the sudden directive.
Propagated on social media, the nationwide protests against economic hardship, tagged #EndBadGovernance, started on Thursday, August 1, 2024, and is scheduled to stretch till August 10 across all states of the Federation as well as the nation’s capital Abuja.
Prices of food and basic commodities have gone through the roof in the last months, as Nigerians battle one of the country’s worst inflation rates and economic crises sparked by the government’s twin policies of petrol subsidy removal and unification of forex windows.
