Enugu Gears Up for Historic International Marathon on May 3 with Over 100 Global Athletes Expected

All roads will lead to Enugu State on May 3, 2025, as over 100 international athletes are expected to converge on the Coal City for the inaugural Enugu City International Marathon. This historic event promises to bring together elite runners from across the globe alongside Nigeria’s finest athletes, transforming the streets of Enugu into a grand stage for what is expected to be the biggest road race ever held in Southeastern Nigeria.
The organisers, Nilayo Sports Management Company, known for their expertise in hosting major road races including the prestigious Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, have assured that this maiden edition will meet global standards. They emphasized their commitment to delivering a world-class experience for athletes and spectators alike.
In a statement, the Executive Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, shared the state’s vision for the marathon. “We want to use this race to tell our own unique story and showcase Enugu as a tourist and commerce destination in the South East,” he said. Governor Mbah also reiterated the state’s preparedness to host both international and local participants, expressing excitement about welcoming the world to experience the charm, culture, and vibrancy of Enugu.
The Enugu State Government has made it clear that the event will go beyond just a sporting competition. It is set to be a full-scale celebration, merging athletics with entertainment. As part of the festivities, Nigerian music sensation Kcee, one of the country’s A-list performers, will take the stage, adding a cultural flair to the occasion and making the marathon a memorable experience for all attendees.
With the combined efforts of the state government and an experienced organizing team, the Enugu City International Marathon is poised to make a strong debut, carving its place as a key event in both Nigeria’s and Africa’s sporting calendar.
