Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has approved a salary increase for the 459 customary court judges across the state’s 153 customary courts. The new salary structure, effective from January, aligns with the state’s minimum wage of N80,000.
The decision, announced by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on New Media, Reuben Onyishi, follows the national wage adjustment, which saw the minimum wage rise to N70,000. Governor Mbah’s approval for an N80,000 minimum wage in the state prompted this upward revision for the judges.
The salary review came after a memo was submitted by the Special Adviser on Legal Matters, Osinachi Nnajieze, in November 2024. The Governor approved the adjustments in response to the growing cost of living.
Under the new structure, the chairmen of the 153 customary courts will see their salaries increase from N42,989.76 to N92,989.76, while the two members of each court will now receive N89,736.18, up from N39,736.18.
