EU reiterates support for young Nigerians in politics

The European Union (EU) has reiterated its commitment to supporting the Nigerian government in strengthening democracy across the country by funding programs that empower young people in politics and governance. Through the Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria Programme, the EU is backing Yiaga Africa’s Constituency Office Internship Programme.

Launched in December 2024 and running until February 2025, this three-month initiative provides a valuable opportunity for young individuals passionate about democratic development. It allows them to gain hands-on experience in legislative processes and constituency engagement, while also deepening their understanding of the workings of constituency offices and the relationship between lawmakers and constituents.

Zissimos Vergos, Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, emphasized the EU’s belief that a thriving democracy relies on responsible leadership and active citizen participation. He highlighted the critical role of young people in shaping Nigeria’s democracy through active involvement in elections, governance, and the development of policies that promote free and fair elections.

Vergos further noted that the internship program not only allows young people to understand legislative processes but also gives them a platform to engage with lawmakers, contribute to policy discussions, and be involved in meaningful constituency engagement. He stressed that providing these opportunities for youth participation is vital for building strong democratic institutions in Nigeria.

Yiaga Africa’s Programme Manager, Yetunde Bakarei, highlighted how the program strengthens the connection between lawmakers and their constituencies, ensuring young people have a role in shaping policies that impact them.

Interns like Olaiya Oluwadamilola expressed how the program has enriched both her personal and professional growth. She noted that the internship has improved her communication skills, boosted her confidence, and inspired her to pursue a career in politics and give back to her community.

Another intern, Salihu Gode, praised the EU’s focus on inclusive governance and the importance of mentorship in shaping her political aspirations. With the skills and knowledge she has gained, Gode is committed to driving change in her community and promoting the empowerment of women in politics, an area the EU actively supports.
