Ex-Kogi Governor Explains Decision to Surrender to EFCC After Ignoring Invitations

Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has opened up on his decision to finally respond to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after initially ignoring their invitation regarding allegations of financial misconduct during his time in office.

In a statement released on Wednesday by his media office, Bello explained that his decision to surrender was driven by his respect for the rule of law and his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s anti-corruption agenda.

Director of Bello’s media office, Ohiare Michael, said that the former governor willingly turned himself in after careful consultation with his family, legal team, and political allies.

“The former Governor, who has great respect for the rule of law and constituted authority, had, all the while, only sought the enforcement of his fundamental rights to ensure due process,” the statement reads.

Bello’s legal team had been representing him in court regarding the allegations, but he chose to personally appear before the EFCC to clear his name, emphasizing that he has “nothing to hide and nothing to fear.”

The former governor reiterated his support for President Tinubu’s administration and its focus on economic development and the fight against corruption. He also highlighted his track record as Kogi State’s first governor to implement anti-corruption measures aimed at ensuring that state resources benefited the people.

Bello’s statement seeks to reassure the public that he will fully cooperate with the EFCC and that his appearance is part of a broader commitment to transparency and accountability.
