FCCPC to Review MultiChoice Subscription Price Hike

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has announced plans to review the recent price increases by MultiChoice on its DSTV and GOtv cable subscriptions. Adamu Abdullahi, the Acting CEO of FCCPC, revealed this during an exclusive interview with Channels Television on the Dateline Abuja programme.

MultiChoice, the leading satellite television service provider in Sub-Saharan Africa, had announced price hikes across its DSTV and GOtv packages, citing rising operational costs as the reason for the increment. The new prices are set to take effect from May 1, 2024.

For instance, the Premium package on DSTV will now cost N37,000, up from N29,500, while the Compact Plus package will be priced at N25,000, up from N19,800.

Abdullahi stated that the FCCPC will engage relevant stakeholders to ensure Nigerian subscribers receive value for their money.

He also provided updates on other regulatory actions, including the summons issued to the owner of a Chinese store in Abuja over discriminatory practices and the agency’s monitoring of compliance by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company.

Abdullahi warned that sanctions are imminent for any verified infractions by the companies under investigation.

The FCCPC’s move to review the price hikes underscores its commitment to protecting consumer interests and ensuring fair business practices in Nigeria’s competitive market.
