FCT Minister Nyesom Wike Bans Panteka Markets Scavenging

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has imposed a two-week ban on used items markets, commonly known as “Panteka,” in Abuja, effective from Tuesday, January 14, 2025.

Wike made the announcement during the FCT Security Council meeting, outlining that the ban will affect all Panteka markets in the territory. His media aide, Lere Olayinka, shared the update on X (formerly Twitter).

In addition to the ban on Pantekas, Wike also imposed restrictions on scavenging activities within the city. He announced that scavenging will be confined solely to designated dump sites, with all scavenging activities in the city center and surrounding areas now prohibited.

Furthermore, the Minister made it clear that anyone arrested for vandalizing public infrastructure would face charges, including economic sabotage and, in severe cases, attempted murder.

This move is part of the ongoing efforts to maintain security and enhance the cleanliness of the FCT.
