In a bold move to tackle the escalating rate of criminal activities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Minister Nyesom Wike has announced a ₦20 million bounty on any criminal apprehended within the territory.
This announcement was made during a recent parade of suspects by the FCT Police Command in Abuja, where individuals involved in kidnappings and other criminal acts were presented.
Wike emphasized the imperative of eradicating criminality in Abuja, stating unequivocally that such activities will not be tolerated.
He assured the public of imminent reinforcement of law enforcement efforts, with plans underway to provide the police and other security agencies with additional communication gadgets and essential equipment to enhance their operational efficiency.
The urgency of Wike’s declaration stems from the concerning trend of kidnappings in the FCT, with reports indicating nearly 50 recorded cases over the past three years, involving over 200 victims.
Last month, the Commissioner for Public Complaint in the FCT, Dalhatu Ezekiel, urged the Federal Government to address the region’s security challenges promptly, advocating for the declaration of a state of emergency.
Ezekiel further called upon Minister Wike to consider suspending ongoing projects if necessary, emphasizing the paramount importance of prioritizing the safety and well-being of FCT residents.
