‘Fearless in October’ — #EndBadGovernance organisers plan second nationwide protest
Organisers of the #EndBadGovernance protest say they are staging another nationwide demonstration scheduled to commence on October 1.
The Director of Mobilisation of the Take It Back Movement, Damilare Adenola, confirmed the planned protests to journalists on Monday.
Adenola said the protesters’ demands would remain the same unless there were other issues, requiring them to add more.
They added that the federal government did not meet any of the demands that triggered the 10-day nationwide protests.
On August 1-10, thousands of Nigerians took to streets across the country to rail against a pervasive economic hardship.
The 10-day protest was marred by looting and arson in the north.
The protesters, days before the demonstrations, had submitted a list of demands, asking the government to among others, scrap the Senate arm of the National Assembly and make law-making a part-time job for the House of Representatives, pay Nigerian workers a minimum of N250,000, reverse fuel prices and the cost of electricity tariffs to pre-January 2023, and to release and compensate all EndSARS and political detainees.
Asked whether the protesters would heed court orders from state governments requiring them to hold demonstrations at designated points, Adenola responded, “We won’t accept the compliance”.
Deji Adeyanju told journalists that efforts were currently being directed towards ensuring the release of protesters who had been arrested during the previous protests.
