The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the sum of €161,328,228 for the execution of contracts under the first batch of Phase 1 of the Siemens Power projects across Nigeria. This was disclosed by the Minister for Power, Adebayo Adelabu, during a briefing with State House correspondents after the Council meeting, which was presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
In addition, the FEC also approved N1.7 billion for the acquisition of an office complex for the National Electricity Liability Management Company (NEMCO) in Abuja.
Adelabu explained that the first approval was for the award of contracts related to engineering, procurement, construction, and financing for the upgrade of 331kV and 132kV substations under Phase 1 of the Presidential Initiative, commonly known as the Siemens project. This follows the successful completion of the project’s pilot phase.
He highlighted that the approval aligns with the commitment made by President Tinubu during a recent meeting with the President of Germany.
The approved sum will fund the first batch of Phase 1 of the Siemens project, which includes the upgrade of 14 existing (brownfield) substations and the construction of 21 new (greenfield) substations across the country to enhance the transmission segment of Nigeria’s power sector.
The five substations set to be worked on in this first batch are:
Onitsha 331/33kV substation, under the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company
Offa 132/33kV substation, under the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company
Abeokuta 331/33kV substation
Ayede 331/33kV substation
Sokoto 132/33kV substation
The upgrades and new constructions are expected to improve and stabilize the transmission network, significantly benefiting Nigeria’s power sector upon completion.
