FEC Approves N985 Million for Body Scanners at Abuja and Lagos Airports

The Federal Executive Council (FEC), presided over by President Bola Tinubu, has approved a budget of N985 million for the procurement of body scanners at Abuja and Lagos international airports.

This was announced by Lateef Fagbemi, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, during a briefing with State House correspondents following the FEC meeting on Tuesday.

Fagbemi detailed that the procurement of the body scanners was one of three items presented to the council for approval. “We submitted three items to the council for approval, one of which is the procurement of two units of body scanners for use both at Abuja and Lagos international airports at N985 million,” he said.

Other approvals made by the council include the procurement of CNG-powered vehicles and firearms and ammunition for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

In a related development, on June 24, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) inaugurated 120 officers for the aviation security (AVSEC) special force, aimed at securing assets and lives at the airports.

This initiative was highlighted by Festus Keyamo, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, who emphasized that the establishment of the special force is a strategic move to curb touting and other illegal activities around Nigeria’s airports.

Olubunmi Kuku, FAAN’s Managing Director, mentioned that these newly inducted personnel will initially be deployed to five international airports located in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano, and Enugu. Kuku further stated that the next phase would focus on coordination and an ongoing campaign to ensure that airport personnel conduct themselves in a manner that is both acceptable and noticeable to passengers.

These measures reflect the government’s commitment to enhancing security and operational efficiency at Nigeria’s major airports, ensuring a safer and more pleasant travel experience for passengers.
