Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru has reaffirmed the Nigerian Government’s dedication to addressing the ongoing farmer-herder conflicts in the region.
Badaru disclosed this during a meeting in Jos, Plateau State, on Sunday,
The meeting, attended by traditional rulers, opinion leaders, and security agencies, was held at the 3 Division headquarters in Bassa Local Government Area.
Badaru expressed deep concern over the recent violence, particularly in Barkin Ladi and Riyom Local Government Areas, which has resulted in significant loss of life and property. He emphasized that any attempts to partition communities along ethnic or religious lines would be disastrous, advocating instead for peaceful coexistence.
He stated, “Partitioning communities will not be entertained. We must prioritize living together harmoniously.” The minister urged both farmers and herders to reject violence and recognize their interdependence for socio-economic growth.
Acknowledging the challenges posed by ongoing attacks and cattle rustling, Badaru committed to deploying all necessary resources to ensure citizens’ safety and security. He noted that his visit aimed to engage stakeholders and develop strategies to combat the escalating tensions affecting farming activities.
“While our security agencies are working diligently to mediate conflicts, I am particularly saddened by the actions of certain individuals disrupting farming during the rainy season,” he said. He pointed out that the recurrence of clashes poses a significant concern, not only in Plateau State but also in other regions across Nigeria.
Badaru praised security personnel for their efforts and relayed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s appreciation for their work. He concluded by urging the military and other security forces to remain vigilant and proactive in addressing the lingering crisis in the area.
