The Federal Government is contemplating the relocation of the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Suleja, Niger State, following a recent jailbreak that resulted in the escape of 119 inmates.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed during a visit to the centre that the facility, initially designed to house 250 inmates, currently accommodates 499.
Of the 119 inmates who escaped, 13 have been re-arrested.
The jailbreak, which occurred after heavy rainfall on Wednesday night, severely damaged the custodial centre’s infrastructure, including breaching its perimeter fence.
A torrential downpour wreaked havoc on the facility, leading to extensive damage and facilitating the escape of the inmates.
In response to the incident, there are reports that the facility management plans to publish the names and photographs of the escaped inmates.
The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Federal Capital Territory Command spokesperson, Adamu Duza, stated that the command is collaborating with other security agencies to recapture the remaining escapees.
He also assured that the database containing the names of the fleeing inmates would soon be made public to aid in their recapture.
