The Federal Government has announced that Friday, March 29, and Monday, April 1, 2024, will be observed as public holidays to commemorate Good Friday and Easter Monday, respectively.
The declaration came from the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the federal government, as stated in a release signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Aishetu Ndayako, on Wednesday.
In his statement, the Minister emphasized the significance of Easter beyond its religious connotations, highlighting its promotion of values such as love, forgiveness, and compassion.
He underscored these values as essential for fostering social cohesion and harmony within Nigerian society
The Minister urged Christians to internalize these virtues, noting their potential to contribute positively to Nigeria’s socio-economic development by fostering unity, mitigating conflicts, and promoting cooperation among citizens.
Additionally, he called upon Nigerians to demonstrate acts of charity and generosity, thereby aiding in alleviating the material needs of the less privileged members of society.
As the nation prepares to celebrate Easter, the Minister extended warm wishes for a joyous and fulfilling celebration to Christians both within the country and abroad.
He also urged Nigerians to unite with the administration led by President Bola Tinubu in its commitment to achieving sustainable development and fostering prosperity for all.
The declaration of public holidays for Good Friday and Easter Monday serves as a reminder of the importance of religious observances and underscores the government’s recognition of the significance of these occasions to citizens across Nigeria.
