In a bold move to promote women’s economic empowerment, the Federal Government has allocated N500 million to support women interested in the leather goods and footwear manufacturing industry. This initiative, announced by the Minister of Women Affairs, Hajia Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, comes as part of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu.
Sulaiman-Ibrahim shared that the decision will see the Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology supply essential starter packs to women in the leather and footwear manufacturing sector—an industry where women already play a key role. She described the initiative as a game-changer for women, providing them with the tools needed to scale their businesses and contribute significantly to Nigeria’s growing local production.
“This is a thrilling development for women entrepreneurs,” Sulaiman-Ibrahim said. “We ensured that part of this intervention is dedicated to empowering women, giving them access to the necessary resources to expand their businesses and further contribute to the nation’s economic growth.”
The Minister emphasized that the program not only empowers women but also serves as a vital contributor to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). By tapping into the vast potential of this sector, women entrepreneurs can create jobs, boost local production, and strengthen the national economy.
In addition to this exciting announcement, Sulaiman-Ibrahim highlighted a remarkable trend observed during this year’s Ramadan: a decline in food prices, a first for the country during the fasting period. She attributed this positive shift to the administration’s effective policies, which were lauded during the National Economic Council (NEC) and caucus meetings.
“For the first time, even during Ramadan, food prices have dropped,” she remarked proudly. “This reflects the success of our government’s policies, and President Tinubu was commended for this achievement.”
Sulaiman-Ibrahim expressed her satisfaction with the administration’s focus on making food affordable and accessible for all Nigerians, especially during Ramadan. “This means families can prepare meals with ease, ensuring that they can continue their fasting traditions without the added stress of skyrocketing food costs,” she added.
Through these combined efforts, the government remains steadfast in its commitment to the welfare of its citizens, especially women, and is determined to foster an environment where both women and the nation can thrive.
