The Federal Government of Nigeria has confirmed that the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, will resume full flight operations on Monday, April 28, 2025, following the early completion of emergency runway repairs.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) had initially closed the runway on April 18, 2025, after a significant rupture was discovered on a critical section of the asphalt surface. Emergency repairs began on April 22 and were originally scheduled to conclude by May 6, 2025.
However, according to a statement from FAAN, rehabilitation works were completed ahead of schedule, and engineers have now certified the runway safe for aircraft landings and takeoffs.
FAAN expressed its gratitude to all stakeholders, passengers, and airlines for their patience and cooperation during the brief closure, reiterating that the temporary inconvenience was necessary to ensure passenger safety and maintain operational standards.
“All actions were taken in the interest of safety. FAAN appreciates the public’s understanding and sincerely apologises for the inconvenience,” the statement read.
The reopening is expected to restore full connectivity to the South-East region and ease air travel disruptions experienced over the past week.
