FG Approves 50% Feeding Allowance Increase For Inmates

The Nigerian Government has approved a 50% increase in the feeding allowance for inmates in Nigeria’s Custodial Centres, effective from August 2024. This adjustment aims to enhance the welfare of inmates amid rising food costs.

Spokesperson for the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) Umar Abubakar, announced this development during the Strategic Communications Interagency Policy Committee’s monthly press briefing in Abuja. He emphasized that the increase is a response to the rising cost of food and is part of ongoing efforts to improve conditions within the custodial system.

The decision follows a viral video highlighting concerns about inadequate inmate feeding, which has spurred significant public attention. Abubakar clarified that the video in question does not represent the official stance of the NCoS or its reformation and rehabilitation efforts, and an investigation into the video is underway.

In addition to the feeding allowance increase, Abubakar reported that the NCoS is actively engaged in educational and rehabilitative programs.

Over 1,000 inmates are currently pursuing university degrees, with 282 enrolled in diploma and Master’s programs, and six inmates undertaking PhD studies, with three already writing their theses.
