FG Calls on Radio Stations to Drive Climate Change Awareness

The Federal Government has urged radio stations across Nigeria to use their platforms to raise awareness about climate change and its far-reaching impacts on the country.

In a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja to mark World Radio Day, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, emphasized the critical role radio plays in shaping public understanding and inspiring action on environmental issues.

World Radio Day, celebrated annually on February 13, is a UNESCO-designated occasion to acknowledge the vital role of radio in our daily lives. This year’s theme, “Radio and Climate Change,” is particularly relevant to Nigeria as the country grapples with the severe effects of climate change.

Idris pointed out that radio has long been a trusted source of information, especially in times of crisis. He noted that in recent years, the medium has been instrumental in raising awareness about the impact of climate change. With its broad reach and accessibility, radio has the unique ability to educate and motivate people to take action against climate change.

He called on all radio stations in Nigeria to leverage their platforms to inform the public about climate change, its effects on the environment, and the necessary steps to address it. “Radio stations can play an essential role in equipping communities with the knowledge and resources to adapt to climate changes and mitigate their effects,” Idris said.

The minister further stressed the importance of collaboration between radio stations, climate experts, and relevant organizations to ensure the dissemination of accurate and reliable information. By featuring interviews with scientists, environmentalists, and policymakers, radio can help deepen understanding and contribute to finding sustainable solutions, in alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Idris also encouraged individuals and communities to reflect on their personal actions and how these contribute to climate change. Simple lifestyle changes, such as reducing plastic waste, conserving energy, and supporting sustainable agricultural practices, can have a significant positive impact over time.

“As we celebrate radio’s role in combating climate change, we must also remember that climate change is a global challenge,” Idris added. “Its effects transcend national borders, and it is our collective responsibility to collaborate with other nations to find solutions and secure a better future for the next generation.”

The minister also referenced President Tinubu’s remarks at the 29th session of the Conference of Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Speaking at that forum, Tinubu highlighted Nigeria’s vulnerability to climate change and outlined the country’s strategies to mitigate its impact, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance resilience, and incorporate climate solutions into national development plans.

The Federal Government’s call to action underscores the importance of radio as a tool for environmental education and the need for a collective effort in addressing the climate crisis.
