FG, Chinese firm sign MoU on electric bicycles, renewable energy

The Nigerian Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Mutual Commitment Company Limited, a Chinese firm, to advance two key initiatives: the assembly of electric tricycles and the establishment of a renewable energy training center.

This MoU was signed in Beijing, just before the African-China Co-operation Summit, with prominent figures including Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, and the Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) Abba Aliyu, present.

Adelabu highlighted the significance of the MoU, noting its potential to enhance Nigeria’s renewable energy sector and contribute to the country’s broader energy goals. He emphasized that this agreement aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, focusing on improving energy access and creating jobs.

Adelabu also pointed out Nigeria’s need to shift from a centralized power system to a distributed model, which is crucial for reaching rural areas and supporting institutions like universities and hospitals. He expressed optimism that this shift will help Nigeria overcome its current energy access challenges and transition to cleaner energy sources.

The REA’s Aliyu stressed the MoU’s role in building local capacity and job creation, and he committed to monitoring the project’s economic impact, including its contribution to GDP and employment. Mutual Commitment Company Limited is also involved in constructing power plants in Maiduguri and Kaduna, furthering its investment in Nigeria’s energy infrastructure.

The Vice Chairman of MCC, Yan Zhezhu, commended Nigeria’s commitment to advancing its energy sector and expressed eagerness to collaborate on these new projects.
