The recent floods in Maiduguri, Borno State, have caused significant displacement, affecting over a million individuals.
Governor of Borno state Babagana Zulum confirmed this on Wednesday and highlighted ongoing relief efforts and long-term strategies to address the crisis.
During a visit to the Bakassi IDP camp along Biu, Damboa road, Zulum announced the donation of cash and pledged that food items and basic necessities would be provided. Vendors have been engaged to ensure displaced persons in the camp are adequately fed.
In addition, the Nigerian Government has allocated ₦3 billion in flood intervention funds to assist with the immediate challenges posed by the floods. The governor outlined a comprehensive response plan, including the establishment of a health committee to monitor and address potential disease outbreaks.
Search and rescue operations are underway to assess the loss of life and gather data on the affected population. Zulum identified heavy terrestrial rainfall as a primary cause of the flooding, compounded by development that has obstructed traditional water channels. He also noted that the overflow of the Alo Dam, exacerbated by water releases from dams in Cameroon, contributed to the crisis.
Looking ahead, Zulum announced plans to reconstruct the Alo Dam to increase its capacity and to remove structures built in flood-prone areas to prevent future flooding.
