FG panel report reveals reasons for Plateau school collapse

A preliminary report on the tragic occurrence has been produced by the Federal Government-established investigating panel about the collapse of the two-story school building in Jos, Plateau State.

About 154 people were taken to different hospitals after the two-story Saint Academy building, which was located in the Busa Buji town in the Jos North Local Government Area of the state, fell on Friday, killing 22 people.

Speaking to Journalists on Tuesday in Jos, the director general of the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute Samson Duna stated that the panel, led by. O.F. Job of the University of Jos’s Building Department, had found that the structure’s exterior appeared dilapidated and that it was constructed with flimsy materials.

He claimed that because there was no separation between the concrete and the steel reinforcement, the study also suggested that the two-story building’s concrete quality was questionable.

The report also said the slab reinforcement anchorage provided for the structure was inadequate.

Duna enjoined the government and other professional bodies in the construction industry to insist on integrity tests on all distressed buildings, especially those around the collapsed building site.

He said the country had continued to experience building collapse because there had been no regular inspections and penalties for non-compliance.
