The Nigerian Government has announced plans to set up blood collection centers in all 774 local government areas (LGAs) across Nigeria, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
This initiative aims to ensure a consistent supply of blood for medical emergencies and transfusions, addressing critical shortages and improving healthcare outcomes nationwide.
In a statement released on Friday, the spokesperson for the National Blood Service Agency (NBSA) Abdullahi Haruna, outlined the goals of the new program. The initiative is designed to enhance the availability of blood and streamline the process of collection and distribution during medical emergencies.
Director-General of NBSA Saleh Yuguda emphasized the government’s commitment to tackling blood shortages and saving lives through this initiative. “We are working tirelessly to ensure that blood needs are adequately addressed. This initiative is a significant step towards achieving that goal,” Yuguda said.
The NBSA is collaborating with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to establish a robust blood bank at the Corps’ medical facility. This partnership aims to address blood shortages effectively and provide critical support to other security agencies during emergencies.
To launch the project, the FCT will host strategically located blood collection facilities to maximize accessibility. This move is expected to boost blood donation rates and maintain a steady supply for medical use.
“The establishment of these blood collection centers is a testament to the government’s dedication to enhancing the healthcare system in Nigeria,” Yuguda added. “As the project progresses, Nigerians can look forward to improved access to blood transfusions and better overall health outcomes.”
