The National Information Technology Development Agency says it has begun drafting the Nigeria Code of Practice on the use of artificial intelligence such as ChatGPT, and others.
The spokesperson, NITDA, Hadiza Umar, disclosed to newsmen on Tuesday.
ChatGPT is a large language model that uses artificial intelligence to hold text conversations with users. These conversations can feel natural, as if you were asking someone questions.
Umar said that while Nigeria has a national policy for AI, it is yet to have a code of practice.
Speaking further, she said, “On AI, we have drafted the National Artificial Intelligence Policy that is yet to be approved. Also, the agency is already working on drafting the Nigeria code of practice for AI.
Drawing on the distinct challenges and opportunities that AI presents in the Nigerian context, she highlighted that it would not be feasible for the nation to adopt the practice codes of the EU or U.S.
Instead, Nigeria would develop a code that resonates with its unique circumstances, building upon the international codes as a foundation.
Umar maintained that this is critical in light of the increasing concerns around the risks associated with AI use and Nigeria’s readiness to tackle the rise of emerging technologies, notably the introduction of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
