The First Lady of Nigeria Oluremi Tinubu has expressed her endorsement of Governor Umo Eno’s decision to appoint his daughter, Helen Eno Obareki, as the new First Lady of Akwa Ibom State.
This appointment follows the recent passing of Pastor Patience Umo Eno, the governor’s wife. During a condolence visit to the Eno family in Uyo on Friday, Tinubu praised the move as a thoughtful way to honor the legacy of the late First Lady, especially through her signature initiative, the Golden Initiative For All (GIFA).
Accompanied by Nana Shettima, the wife of the Vice President, as well as several wives of state governors and presiding officers of the National Assembly, Senator Tinubu expressed her heartfelt support for the transition. She highlighted that such practices are common in the United States and emphasized the importance of sustaining Patience’s impactful work.
Governor Umo Eno reflected on his profound bond with his late wife, sharing, “I married her when she was 19, and I was 22. I called her Oluwa-Kemi because she was truly a gift from God.” He described her as a source of comfort and strength through their shared challenges and victories. “Her passing is an irreplaceable loss for me,” he said, acknowledging her role as his greatest supporter and toughest critic.
Introducing Helen Eno Obareki, Governor Eno acknowledged the challenges ahead but expressed confidence in her ability to uphold her mother’s legacy. “It is not an easy task ahead. I present our daughter, Helen, to continue the duties of the office,” he stated, noting that she would collaborate closely with the Deputy Governor and the Commissioner for Women’s Affairs and Social Welfare.
In her remarks, Tinubu recognized Patience Eno’s contributions to her own national pet project and her dedication to the governor’s ARISE governance agenda. “Politics aside, we are all Nigerians,” she said, offering condolences and encouragement to the family. Addressing Helen directly, she stated, “I believe God will guide you. You will accomplish even more than your mother.”
Governor Eno also addressed rumors regarding his potential remarriage during a separate condolence visit from Senate President Godswill Akpabio, lightheartedly stating, “I’m not considering remarrying anytime soon,” and joking about the financial burden of another bride price.
He affirmed that the legacy of his late wife will endure, emphasizing that Helen’s appointment is vital for continuing the impactful programs initiated by her mother.
