Five Persons Feared Dead As Boat Capsizes In Anambra

Five persons are feared dead in a boat mishap in Anambra State, as they, reportedly, sailed from Kogi State to Anambra, through the River Niger

A source in the riverine area of Anambra West Local Government Area revealed that the incident happened on Sunday.

According to eyewitnesses, the deceased comprised mainly women and children.

Though the deceased persons have not been identified, they were said to hail from a riverine part of Kogi State and were travelling by water to Onitsha for various businesses.

The eyewitnesses also said some of the victims were from parts of Mmiata Anam in Anambra East Local Government Area.

Meanwhile, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident, saying that its operatives received a distress call and the Marine operatives rushed to the incident spot and were able to rescue about 30 persons, while five persons were confirmed dead. He added that the capsized boat was also recovered and the situation was under control in the area.

Preliminary information revealed that the boat was from Kogi state, conveying goods and passengers before the unfortunate incident occurred.

The Police said the cause is yet to be ascertained, as the investigation is ongoing.
