The Kogi State government has reported that more than 70 communities have been submerged due to severe flooding.
Deputy Governor Joel Salifu made this announcement during an inspection tour of the Edeha community, emphasizing that the flood situation has exceeded the state’s capacity to manage effectively.
Salifu, who also chairs the 2024 Kogi State Flood Disaster Response Committee, noted that despite the government’s proactive measures this year, the current conditions have gone beyond local control. “It is obvious that the present situation is beyond what the Kogi State government can handle; we cannot do it alone,” he stated.
While the extent of property and farmland damage remains uncalculated, Salifu expressed relief that no lives have been lost in the affected areas thus far. He reported that many residents have relocated to Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps set up by the state government.
Abdullahi Isah, Chief of the Edeha community, confirmed the situation, stating that over 70 communities are currently underwater. He praised the state government for its timely intervention, which has helped save lives and property. Many affected individuals have moved to higher ground and are now residing in IDP camps established in the area.
The paramount ruler of the community, Ohimegye Kotonkarfe, Saidu Akawu-Salihu, highlighted that the flooding extends beyond Edeha, affecting all communities along the flood-prone routes. He mentioned that areas such as Gaduma, Gabor, Ikumo, and Edama are currently submerged, with other communities including Apaku, Egasema, and Oka also experiencing significant flooding.
As the situation unfolds, authorities are working to provide support and resources to those displaced by the flood.
