Following the resignation of Portuguese tactician Jose Peseiro, there has been much speculation and anticipation in Nigerian football circles since the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has not yet named a replacement.
Okpala has stated his objectives clearly, even if there is still discussion regarding whether the NFF should keep Peseiro or choose an indigenous coach.
The former midfielder for Enugu Rangers, who was a member of the victorious Nigerian squad that won the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations title, is confident in his ability to guide the Super Eagles to victory.
In an interview with reporters, Okpala praised Peseiro’s efforts while asserting his readiness for the challenge ahead.
“The only thing I can say about Peseiro is that he has tried his best, but the game goes on,” Okpala remarked confidently. “I’m one of those that should replace him.”
Okpala’s confidence is backed by a solid coaching career, including a stint as assistant coach to Stephen Keshi when the Super Eagles clinched the AFCON title for the third time in 2013.
Reflecting on his past successes, Okpala emphasized, “I’ve won the Nations Cup as a player, and I have won it as an assistant coach to Keshi; the record is there. It is not easy. It’s not by luck or mathematics; it’s by knowledge.”
Drawing parallels between past and present squads, Okpala highlighted the potential of the current crop of players. “We have players that can win the World Cup,” he asserted confidently. “So yes, if I am given a chance, I will do wonders with these boys.”
