Former NHIS Executive Secretary Usman Yusuf Arrested by EFCC Over Fraud Allegations

The former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) Usman Yusuf, has been apprehended by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The arrest, confirmed by the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, took place on Wednesday, following a raid on Yusuf’s residence.

According to the EFCC, Yusuf is scheduled to face arraignment on Thursday, January 30, 2025.

The arrest follows a petition submitted to both the former administration under President Muhammadu Buhari and the Federal Ministry of Health, accusing Yusuf of misconduct and fraudulent activities during his tenure. These allegations had led to Yusuf’s dismissal in 2019, just seven months after a fact-finding panel appointed by the Federal Ministry of Health recommended his removal for the alleged mismanagement of N919 million.

The investigation into his actions continues to be a significant issue, as the public and authorities look for accountability over the funds and the alleged corruption under his leadership at NHIS.
