FRSC arrests 7,798 for fake number plates in Nigeria within two months

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has arrested 7,798 individuals over the past two months for offenses related to fake vehicle number plates. FRSC Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, shared these statistics during a meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on FRSC in Abuja on Wednesday.

The meeting was convened in response to concerns about the growing presence of fake vehicle number plates in the country, which pose a serious risk to public safety. The discussion also highlighted the FRSC’s focus on addressing key road safety and national security challenges.

A statement issued by the Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO), Olusegun Ogungbemide, on Wednesday further emphasized that Mohammed sought the support of the National Assembly to aid the Corps’ efforts. He briefed the committee members on the ongoing crackdown against fake vehicle registrations, despite resistance from vehicle owners using fraudulent number plates.

Mohammed assured the committee that the FRSC is committed to enhancing the National Vehicle Identification Scheme (NVIS) Portal to prevent vehicles with fake registrations from being driven on Nigerian roads. He emphasized that the Corps’ proactive approach has led to the arrest of 7,798 individuals for number plate-related offenses in just two months.

Highlighting the growing problem, Mohammed explained that the FRSC’s data shows a troubling rise in offenses, with many motorists using fake or unauthorized number plates. He expressed gratitude for the support of the National Assembly, calling it a key development in the battle against fake number plates. He urged lawmakers to strengthen existing laws and regulations to ensure offenders face appropriate consequences.

The Corps Marshal also praised the National Assembly for its commitment to road safety and national security. He encouraged Nigerians to support the FRSC by ensuring they use legitimate number plates and reporting any instances of fake plates to the nearest FRSC Command.

In response, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on FRSC, Honourable Abiodun Adesida, assured the Corps Marshal of the National Assembly’s continued support for the FRSC’s efforts, commending the crackdown as a positive and necessary step forward.
