The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has expressed its heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and the Government of Jigawa State following a tragic tanker explosion that resulted in significant loss of life.
In a statement issued by Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed from Abuja, he conveyed his thoughts and prayers to the affected families and the residents of Jigawa.
The unfortunate incident occurred in Majia, where 147 people lost their lives while attempting to scoop Premium Motor Spirit from a fallen tanker. Mohammed highlighted the critical importance of adhering to safety regulations to prevent such tragedies.
He urged all road users to exercise caution and to await the arrival of FRSC emergency and rescue operatives during such incidents. “Whenever an incident of this nature occurs, it is vital to stay well away from the tanker, as it contains highly flammable substances that pose severe risks,” he cautioned.
According to reports, the fire was ignited when villagers rushed to scoop fuel from a detached tanker after it crashed while dodging a speed bump at high speed. The driver and conductor of the tanker survived without injuries.
In light of the incident, the Corps Marshal has ordered an investigation into the crash and directed Commanding Officers at various tank farms to ensure that all tankers adhere to minimum safety standards before transporting inflammable substances.
In addition, the injured victims have been taken to Ringim General Hospital, Jahun General Hospital, and Khadija Clinic Majia for urgent medical care. A mass burial was held for the victims, highlighting the profound impact of this tragedy on the community.
