FRSC urges public compliance with traffic laws

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has called on the Nigerian public to adhere to traffic laws and regulations in order to reduce the high number of road accidents. FRSC spokesman Olusegun Ogungbemide made the appeal on Thursday in Abuja, emphasizing the importance of public cooperation in maintaining a safe and secure motoring environment.

Ogungbemide expressed concern over the rising number of road crashes and fatalities, attributing them to impunity and a blatant disregard for traffic laws. He revealed that the corps had recorded a significant number of accidents and deaths caused by reckless driving, overloading, and improper loading of vehicles.

He also pointed out that advanced countries, which are often celebrated for their development, did not achieve their progress without the active support and cooperation of their citizens. He noted that these countries have well-established systems and laws, which are strictly enforced and adhered to by their citizens.

Ogungbemide stressed the need for Nigeria to follow a similar path of development and road safety, urging citizens to comply with traffic laws to ensure harmony, security, and safety for all. He reiterated that traffic laws are put in place to save lives and prevent accidents.

“Any society where laws prevail does so with the support of the public,” he stated. “If laws are not followed, it leads to chaos and disorder.”

The FRSC spokesman also warned against the dangers of “mix loading” and overloading, which, he said, could contribute to accidents and fatalities.
