In a groundbreaking achievement for Nollywood, Funke Akindele’s latest film, “A Tribe Called Judah,” has officially become the first in the industry to gross ₦113 million in its opening weekend.
The much-anticipated drama, distributed by FilmOne Entertainment, captivated audiences as it hit cinemas on December 15, 2023.
Including advanced screenings held before the official release day, the film soared to even greater heights, accumulating an impressive total of ₦122.7 million.
The record-breaking success is attributed to the gripping narrative, following a band of brothers compelled to navigate a life of crime to save their mother, resonating strongly with viewers.
“A Tribe Called Judah” drew a substantial crowd, amassing a total of 34,996 cinema admissions, combining both regular screenings and advanced previews.
The film’s exceptional opening weekend performance has set it on a trajectory that could potentially surpass the current Nollywood highest-grossing film, “Battle on Buka Street,” also a creation of Funke Akindele, which stands at ₦668.4 million.
If this trend continues, Funke Akindele may find herself securing the top three spots on Nollywood’s highest-grossing films list. Currently holding the second position is “Omo Ghetto: The Saga,” another cinematic masterpiece by Akindele, with a total gross of ₦636.1 million.
