Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti Biopic Continues to Shine at Nigerian Box Office

The biopic “Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti” has maintained its strong performance at the Nigerian box office, grossing a total of ₦131.4 million. For the second consecutive week, the film has held its position in the number two spot, according to the latest data from the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN).

On Monday, June 10, 2024, CEAN released a report detailing the top 10 films exhibited in Nigeria, covering the period from June 7 to June 9, 2024. Topping the box office is the Hollywood action film “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” which debuted on June 7 and quickly claimed the number one spot with a total gross of ₦68.9 million.

“Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti” overtook last week’s top film, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” which has now slipped to the third position with a total gross of ₦105.9 million. The Nollywood crime film “Criminal” follows in fourth place, having earned a total of ₦32.3 million, including a weekly gross of ₦8.9 million.

“Ajosepo,” a comedy-drama, continues to enjoy success at the box office. Since its release, it has consistently ranked within the top 10, making ₦50.4 million in its first five days (April 10 to April 14). It currently holds the eighth spot with a weekly gross of ₦2.4 million and a total gross of ₦251.4 million.

The newly released film “Deafening Silence,” which premiered on June 7, has grossed ₦1.2 million so far. Meanwhile, “Blacksmith: Alagbede,” a Yoruba epic film, rounds out the list of Nollywood releases. It has accumulated a total gross of ₦62 million and is ranked tenth, with a weekly total of ₦974,675.

These figures highlight the robust performance of both Nollywood and Hollywood films in the Nigerian market, with “Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti” particularly standing out as a significant success in the biopic genre. The continued success of “Ajosepo” and the steady performance of other local films underscore the growing strength and diversity of Nollywood.
