Generative AI unlikely to see groundbreaking changes in 2025 – Google CEO
Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai has predicted that the pace of groundbreaking advancements in generative artificial intelligence (AI) will slow by 2025.
Speaking at the New York Times DealBook Summit, Pichai acknowledged the significant progress made in AI so far but suggested that as the industry matures, the rate of transformation will likely decelerate.
“I think the progress is going to get harder. When I look at [2025], the low-hanging fruit is gone,” Pichai said, emphasizing that achieving the next phase of progress will require overcoming more complex challenges.
He further explained, “The hill is steeper. You’re definitely going to need deeper breakthroughs as we get to the next stage.”
While Pichai believes that generative AI models like ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Meta’s Llama will continue to improve, he noted that future advancements are likely to be incremental rather than revolutionary.
One of the key barriers to faster progress, Pichai identified, is a lack of trust in generative AI. According to surveys, 22% of respondents cited trust as a significant concern. This distrust, coupled with limited public awareness of AI’s capabilities, potential risks, and doubts about its necessity, may further hinder the rapid adoption and development of the technology.
