Gérard Depardieu Faces Trial in Paris on Sexual Assault Charges

French cinema legend Gérard Depardieu is on trial in Paris this week, accused of sexually assaulting two women during the production of the 2021 film Les Volets Verts (“The Green Shutters”). At 76 years old, the actor faces serious charges of groping a 54-year-old set dresser and a 34-year-old assistant director, as well as making lewd comments and engaging in inappropriate physical behavior.

Prosecutors claim the incidents were disturbing, with one allegedly involving Depardieu using his legs to trap one of the women, groping her in front of other crew members. Both women, who have chosen to remain anonymous, have filed formal complaints, and their identities have been kept confidential to protect their privacy.

Depardieu, however, denies all charges. In a public letter published in Le Figaro in October 2023, he wrote: “Never, but never, have I abused a woman.”

Originally set for October 2024, the trial was postponed due to health concerns surrounding the actor, who recently underwent a quadruple heart bypass and battles diabetes.

Despite these health setbacks, a court-appointed medical expert has deemed him fit to stand trial. Depardieu is expected to attend the two-day hearing with scheduled breaks.

This marks the first time the iconic actor, known for his illustrious career in French cinema, has faced a courtroom over sexual assault allegations. Although he has been accused of misconduct by nearly 20 women over the years, no other case has progressed to trial—many were dropped for lack of evidence or surpassed the statute of limitations.

During the trial, the court will hear witness testimonies. However, a verdict is not expected immediately, leaving the case to unfold in the public eye.
