The Lagos State Taskforce has carried out a comprehensive enforcement exercise at Adeniji-Adele and adjoining routes to alleviate traffic gridlock and curb criminal activities caused by illegal operators of bus parks and bus stops along that axis.
The rigorous operation was led by the Chairman of the Agency, CSP Adetayo Akerele, who emphasized on Friday, July 5, the prolonged activities of commercial motor operators in the area necessitated decisive action.
Akerele described the activities of commercial bus drivers (Danfo) as worrisome due to the significant traffic obstructions they cause, which adversely affect motorists and residents of Lagos.
He said, “Motorists should not endure longer travel times on this route due to the actions of a few. Occupying lanes to create illegal bus parks is unacceptable, and we are here to enforce compliance. Operators must use designated bus parks for passenger pick-up and drop-off.”
The Chairman announced that the enforcement exercises will be continuous and intensified across various parts of the State. He described his actions as people-oriented, ensuring that Lagosians can properly utilize public amenities.
In a related development, the Taskforce also cleared Awolowo Way and Ipodo Street near Ikeja Under Bridge of illegal car parks and garages. CSP Akerele reported that 84 vehicles were confiscated during these operations. He assured residents that the practice of commercial bus drivers using unapproved locations for passenger activities would soon end.
“Go-slow is not natural, not created by God. It results from the actions of a few recalcitrant drivers. The traffic obstructions during rush hours extend to the Third Mainland Bridge and Kodesoh Street, making these areas impassable,” CSP Akerele said.
Operators of kiosks and makeshift stores on Adeniji-Adele’s kerbs and walkways were also targeted, with structures cleared to maintain pedestrian pathways. Traders on Ipodo Street were warned to move their goods off the road or face confiscation. Akerele committed to maintaining the order and serenity achieved during the weeklong exercise.
