The Gombe State Commissioner of Health, Habu Dahiru, has announced that the state Public Health Emergency Operations Centre has been placed on alert following confirmed and suspected cases of diphtheria in Herwagana Ward, Gombe state, northeastern area of Nigeria.
Diphtheria is a bacterial infection that usually affects the mucous membranes of the nose and throat. It can cause serious complications if left untreated. Dahiru revealed that there has been one confirmed case of diphtheria in the state and emphasized the need for preventative measures to stop its spread.
One crucial preventive measure against diphtheria is vaccination. Dahiru assured the public that vaccines against diphtheria are available at Primary Health Centres throughout Gombe State, particularly for children. He urged parents and guardians to ensure their children receive these shots as soon as possible to protect them from this potentially fatal illness.
In addition to vaccination, Dahiru called for increased alertness and preventative actions in impacted areas to stop the spread of diphtheria. This includes promoting good hygiene practices such as regular handwashing with soap and water, covering mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and avoiding close contact with those who are sick.
The announcement serves as a reminder of the importance of staying vigilant when it comes to public health threats such as diphtheria. Both healthcare providers and community members need to work together to prevent further spread of this disease.
