Gov. Hyacinth Alia Urges Benue People to Prioritize IDP Welfare Over Politics

Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has called on the people of the state to cease politicizing the plight of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), stressing that their welfare should be a concern for all well-meaning citizens.

In a statement issued by the Governor’s spokesman,Tersoo Kula, Alia emphasized that the issue of IDPs transcends politics and requires collective action, constructive dialogue, and genuine concern for their well-being. He warned against attempts to undermine his administration’s efforts, questioning the goodwill of those engaging in such actions.

“The plight of the IDPs is not a matter for political gain,” Kula quoted the governor as saying. “This is a time for collective action and sincere efforts to address the challenges faced by these vulnerable people.”

Governor Alia, he added, remains committed to finding lasting solutions for the displaced persons and all residents of Benue. Despite facing criticism, the governor’s administration will not be distracted from its mission to ensure the safety, dignity, and development of every citizen.

“The administration understands that true resettlement is more than political promises. The Durable Solutions initiative, which prioritizes dignity and security, is aimed at empowering IDPs to rebuild their lives,” Kula continued. “We are providing better shelters, skills acquisition programs, and facilitating access to year-round farming to ensure these communities can thrive.”

Alia’s commitment to returning IDPs to their ancestral lands remains steadfast, though he cautioned that this process must be handled with care. Rushing displaced individuals back to unsafe areas, he said, would be irresponsible. The administration is working closely with security agencies to ensure that these communities are safe before facilitating their return.

“We are actively working with security forces to reclaim and secure these communities, ensuring that when our people return, it is to a secure environment,” Kula added.

The governor’s spokesman also addressed those quick to criticize every step of the administration’s efforts, urging them to acknowledge the genuine progress being made rather than sow discord. He reminded critics that these deep-rooted issues had been neglected by previous administrations.

“Rather than appreciating the efforts to uplift the IDPs, some prefer to create division,” Kula concluded.
