Government Releases Funds for NASU Salaries Amid Ongoing Strike

The Nigerian Government has announced the release of funds to pay the withheld salaries of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Federal Universities (NASU). This information was confirmed in a statement by the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) in Abuja.

In addition to salary payments, the OAGF stated that funds have also been allocated for benefits to retirees under the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme Sector (NUPCPS). Payments for NASU members have already begun, with many reporting receipt of their salaries.

The OAGF reiterated its commitment to the welfare of Nigerian workers and retirees. This announcement comes just as NASU and the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) initiated a nationwide strike on Sunday.

The unions cited several unresolved issues leading to the strike, including inconsistencies in payment through the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), non-payment of earned allowances, and unpaid arrears related to the national minimum wage.

They have expressed frustration over the government’s failure to uphold agreements made with the unions and called on Nigerians and stakeholders to urge the government to honor its commitments to prevent a “total breakdown of industrial harmony” in universities.

Notably, the OAGF’s statement did not mention any payment plans for SSANU members currently on strike.
