Government Unveils Startup Support Portal to Propel Nigeria’s Innovation Ecosystem

The Federal Government has officially launched the Startup Support and Engagement Portal.

This portal, a pivotal component of the Nigeria Startup Act, aims to streamline the identification and aggregation of startups across the nation.

Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, announced the portal’s launch on X, Tuesday night, emphasizing its role in facilitating engagement and support for various players within the startup ecosystem.

He tweeted, “We are pleased to announce the launch of the Startup Support and Engagement Portal, a key requirement for the implementation of the Nigeria Startup Act.”

The newly unveiled portal, accessible at https://startup.gov.ng/ serves as a central hub for Nigerian startups, venture capital companies, hubs, and innovation centers to register and participate in the burgeoning ecosystem.

Minister Tijani underscored that this initiative would pave the way for the establishment of startup consultative forums, essential in selecting representatives for the National Council for Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

“We invite all Nigerian startup venture capital companies, hubs, and innovation centers to register at the portal and look forward to working with all industry stakeholders,” Tijani urged, highlighting the collaborative effort required for the full implementation of the Startup Act.

The minister expressed optimism in leveraging the portal to foster discourse and consensus among ecosystem players.

This announcement comes a year after the formal signing of the Startup Act into law by former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Oswald Osaretin Guobadia, former Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari (Digital Transformation) and lead for the Nigeria Startup Bill, echoed support for the initiative, emphasizing the collaborative nature essential for sustainable policy development. Guobadia remarked, “The work is ahead, this announcement by the government is an indication that collaboration is key to sustainable policy development. Beneficiaries must remain engaged.”
