Kwara State strengthens inter-agency security collaboration as officials visit Kaiama following reports of terrorist activity

Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara State, alongside high-ranking military and intelligence officials, has carried out a security assessment in Kaiama Local Government Area following alleged threats by a suspected terrorist group known locally as ‘Mahmuda’.

The governor’s visit, which took place on Monday, was part of a broader effort to bolster inter-agency coordination and address growing concerns over the safety of border communities. The Kwara State Police Command, in a statement issued on Tuesday by its spokesperson SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, confirmed that the delegation was in the area to evaluate the security landscape and enhance joint response strategies.

According to the statement, the mission was designed to foster stronger collaboration between various security outfits and improve situational awareness, particularly in communities along the Kainji National Park corridor, where recent tensions have emerged.

Governor Abdulrazaq was accompanied by Major General O.G. Onubugu, the General Officer Commanding 2 Division of the Nigerian Army; Brigadier General E.B. Barkins of Sobi Cantonment; Commissioner of Police Adekimi Ojo; the State Director of the Department of State Services, Mr. Michael Aganwu; and the Governor’s Senior Special Adviser on Security, Aliyu Muyideen.

During the visit, the delegation met with traditional and political leaders including the Emir of Kaiama, Alhaji Muazu Shehu Omar (Bagidi Ki Yaru IV), and key stakeholders such as Abubakar Abdullahi Bata, Commissioner for Local Government and Community Development; LGA Chairmen Abdullahi Abubakar Danladi and Issa Jubril; and members of the State Assembly. Discussions centered around strengthening the region’s security structure and protecting communities in Kemenji, Karoji, and areas around the Kainji National Park.

The officials also visited a local oil mill as part of the day’s inspection tour before returning safely to Ilorin. The police command reassured residents that the situation in Kaiama and surrounding areas remains under control, with increased deployments aimed at preventing further security breaches.

“The people of Kaiama, Baruten, and neighboring communities should go about their daily activities without fear,” the statement read. “However, we urge continued vigilance and cooperation with law enforcement. Let it be clearly stated that anyone or any group threatening the safety of our communities will be met with the full force of the law.”
