Governor Alex Otti Calls for Intelligence-Driven Approach to Tackle Drug Abuse in Abia State

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has called for a comprehensive and intelligence-driven approach to combat drug abuse, stressing the need for collaboration between government agencies and security forces in addressing the growing menace.

Otti made the call on Thursday during a visit by the new State Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Nnadi Wilfred, in Nvosi, Isialangwa South Local Government Area. The governor highlighted the evolving nature of the drug problem and its increasing link to criminal activities in Nigeria.

He expressed concern over the impact of drug abuse on crime rates, noting that many criminal activities often have their roots in substance abuse. “When you look at crime and drug abuse, you will see they are closely related. In many cases, individuals involved in crime begin with drugs,” Otti stated. He emphasized that combating drug abuse requires a united front, urging security agencies, including the Army, Navy, and DSS, to work together in the fight against crime. “We are all one, and wherever support is needed, you can count on the government to help eradicate criminality,” he added.

Governor Otti reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting law enforcement agencies in ensuring a safe and secure environment. He recommended that the NDLEA team engage with his Senior Special Assistant on Homeland Security to identify and address crime hotspots in the state.

In addition, Otti underscored the importance of education in preventing crime, particularly drug abuse. He expressed optimism that the state’s free and compulsory education policy for primary and secondary school children would significantly reduce the vulnerability of young people to drugs and criminal activities.

Earlier, the new NDLEA Commander, Nnadi Wilfred, who assumed office in December, thanked Governor Otti and his wife, Priscilla, for their ongoing efforts in raising awareness about drug abuse and providing rehabilitation for illicit drug users.
