The political standoff between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Rivers State House of Assembly has escalated, with the House taking aim at the governor’s handling of the state’s Public Procurement Law.
During Monday’s plenary session, Speaker Martin Amaewhule accused the governor of financial irresponsibility and reckless spending without proper appropriation.
One of the main items on the agenda was the governor’s management of state finances, which Speaker Amaewhule strongly criticized.
Deputy Speaker Dumle Maol urged his colleagues to veto the governor on the state public procurement amendment bill, highlighting concerns such as the non-payment of March salaries to Emohua Local Government staff.
With a decisive bang of the gavel, the Speaker signaled the passage of the second reading of the Rivers State Public Procurement Amendment Bill 2024.
This latest clash is part of an ongoing political saga between Governor Fubara and the House of Assembly.
It follows five previous instances where the Assembly has overridden the governor to enact laws. In April, the Assembly vetoed Governor Fubara and enacted an amendment to the Rivers State Local Government Law.
