Governor Mutfwang Suspends Mining Activities in Plateau State Amid Rising Insecurity

Governor of Plateau State Caleb Mutfwang has issued an executive order suspending all mining activities in the state with immediate effect. This measure is aimed at addressing the growing concerns over illegal mining and the associated insecurity in various local government areas.

Governor Mutfwang cited a sharp increase in illegal mining activities and the influx of foreigners into mining areas, which have contributed to rising incidents of criminal activities, including rape, banditry, illegal possession of firearms, drug trafficking, and kidnapping.

To address these challenges, the governor has inaugurated a technical committee tasked with verifying the identities of individuals and entities licensed to carry out mining activities within the state. Additionally, the state government will work with the federal government to establish a comprehensive framework for monitoring mining operations and ensuring adherence to proper standards.

The executive order also includes plans for a thorough review of the security situation in all mining regions and a focus on fostering better community development agreements to address the socio-economic impact of mining on local communities.

The suspension, effective from February 21, 2025, underscores the state government’s commitment to ensuring a safer and more regulated mining environment while addressing the broader socio-economic concerns related to the industry.
