Governor Obaseki Calls for Calm Amid Controversy Over Edo Election Results

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has urged residents to remain calm following the announcement of the September 21 governorship election results by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which declared Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner.

Okpebholo received 291,667 votes, defeating Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 247,274 votes, and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP), who came in third with 22,761 votes.

In a statement reacting to the election results, Obaseki expressed concern that the election was marked by a disregard for democratic processes and the rule of law. He encouraged aggrieved individuals to explore legal options to voice their concerns.

“The power bestowed by democracy allows the people to choose their leaders,” he said. “When this power is blatantly seized, it is not just a tragedy but a travesty of democracy.”

Obaseki acknowledged that many Edo residents are feeling disheartened and powerless in light of the election’s outcome, stating, “It is understandable that many people feel sad and aggrieved.” He urged citizens to refrain from violence and property destruction, asserting, “Peace and justice will always win in the end.”

He emphasized the need for lawful avenues to address grievances, stating, “In a democracy, there are safeguards for addressing grievances, and we hope those affected will seek resolution for this blatant disregard of law and process.”

Obaseki concluded by reassuring Edo residents of the government’s commitment to their wellbeing and security, encouraging them to continue with their daily lives amidst the current tensions.
