The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has stated that commenting on contentious political issues currently unfolding in the country would reflect a “poor sense of political history.” In a statement signed by its Director General, Abdulateef Shittu, the NGF emphasized its position of neutrality in order to avoid promoting disunity.
The statement follows media inquiries about recent political developments in Rivers State. The NGF clarified that as an umbrella body for state governments, it focuses on fostering unified policy positions and collaboration with stakeholders to drive sustainable socioeconomic growth and the well-being of citizens.
Given that the NGF consists of governors elected on various political platforms, the organization chose to refrain from taking stances on partisan issues that could divide its members. The statement further highlighted that such divisive actions would not align with the Forum’s historical context, especially considering the challenges it faced just a few years ago following internal political disagreements.
Nevertheless, the NGF remains committed to advocating for bold positions on key governance issues like wages, taxes, education, and universal healthcare.
The Forum urged the public and media to understand its stance and expressed confidence that relevant platforms and crisis management mechanisms would address any ongoing political tensions.
